A mere 15 miles off pavement and down a logging road into the woods of northern Minnesota you will come across the Skibo Road crossing at M.P. 43 on the NSM RR. Rumor had it this was the most remote railroad crossing in the country. Funny part about this is there is not only a road crossing here but this is also where the Cliffs Erie/LTV Steel/ Erie Mining Company RR crossed the Northshore Mining RR. So once a person gets out here, you wait for the train which gives a person a lot of extra time to listen to nothing but the wind and an occasional fury woodland creature, hopefully of the friendly variety. Then you hear the faint noise of four EMD's, then it gets louder, then the train appears. Start shooting pictures off. Then you watch they glide by and listen to them as they roll towards Silver Bay. Then you drive back out to civilization.
