One of the most memorable train chasing trips I've ever undertaken was following Union Pacific's E9s leading a directors special along the scenic Montana Subdivision between Pocatello, Idaho and Silver Bow, Montana. Here the OPCSB curves along the Big Hole River at milepost 366, amid beautiful fall foliage through the tiny village of Maiden Rock. We followed the OPCSB north to Silver Bow (near Butte) and waited to follow the train back to Pocatello the following morning. An unforgettable weekend exploring this remote corner of the far flung Union Pacific system.
