Remarks & Notes |
CN A43531 30 makes it's way south down the Don Valley. Track spurring off in the background is the former CP Belleville Sub Don Branch, which spurred off the current Belleville Sub at Leaside Yard. Back in the day, this used to be the main line from Union to Montréal for CPR Passenger liners and Peterborough (via Havelock Sub) for RDC's. Most freights would require two additional steamers to get heavy trains up the grade out of downtown to Leaside yard. After the CP gave up their passenger service in the 70's, this line still brought mainline freight and intermodal trains down the Valley from the Belleville Sub east of Leaside Yard into CP's yards downtown. It survived up until the mid(?)-nineties handling only locals to the Port Authority after all railyards downtown disappeared in the 80's (this included CN's Mimico Yard, once CN's main Toronto yard, now [c. 1980's] divided into GO Transit's Willowbrook Facility on the north side of the Oakville Sub, and VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre on the south), in favour of CP Agincourt and CN Macmillan Yards in suburban Toronto. In recent times, GO Transit/Metrolinx acquired this five-mile stretch of track from Leaside to Don sometime in 2010. Possible GO service from Toronto to Peterborough are among the rumours circulating around this acquisition. But alas, only time can tell. |
