Lander, MD 3/15/2012 - Amtrak's PO-30 is eastbound along the C&O Canal east of Lander Road, passing the Bald Eagle hiker-biker campground. The canal once hauled coal and other industrial commodities out of Cumberland, MD, being towed by mules that walked along the towpath. Its inefficiency was eclispsed by the powerful railroad that paralleled its route all the way to Maryland's Queen City, and today it is nothing more than a swampy shadow of its former self, maintained by the U.S. Government as a national park. At the helm of Amtrak's Capitol Limited today is Brian Paulus, well known for his photography and writing in railfan circles.
