Eastbound San Juan. The Denver & Rio Grande Western's "San Juan New Mexico Express" runs south (railroad east) along the icy Animas River at Tefft, on a cold February afternoon. Before the advent of steam heat in the mid-1930s, passengers on the San Juan would have been huddled near the coal stoves to keep warm. Even on today's Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the coaches are typically heated with individual heater units, although now, they are cleaner, more efficient propane-fired units. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
