Trendsetter As a full moon starts to rise in the east, alien bees illuminate the GRWR 3086. Clearly this GP40’s latest paint says the unit came from the Southern Pacific, but lying beneath that coat of scarlet and gray is the Black and Aspen Gold of the Rio Grande. While originally built for the Grande in November of 1971, this unit holds the special recognition as the first Rio Grande locomotive to be painted into the Southern Pacific speed lettering scheme on July 18, 1992 as well as only 1 of 2 Rio Grande GP40 models to ever receive this paint.
