Two days before this photo was taken an eastbound loaded coal train rear-ended another on BNSF’s Sand Hills Subdivision near Lakeside, Nebraska. The collision caused extensive damage to the first eastbound’s two locomotives—including the 8814, which was the lead locomotive—and the DPU of the second eastbound. A total of 7 coal hoppers were also derailed. On May 19, 2006 a westbound coal train creeps past the wreckage, as the crew from R.J. Corman Derailment Services cleans up the mess.
