Happy Birthday, Norfolk Southern! Thirty years ago today, NS was formed with the merger of the Norfolk and Western and Southern Railway. Later, on June 1, 1999, the Conrail acquisition led to an even bigger and stronger Corporation. To symbolize the occasion, a photo shoot was organized with an Altoona-rebuilt EMD SD60E (6902) and three borrowed GP30's: Conrail 2233 from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Southern 2594 from the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth (Atlanta), GA (on loan to the Tennesee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga), and NW 522 from the Roanoke Chapter NRHS. Crazy pool power consists, colorful gatherings of locomotives at a diesel service area, or a mixture of colorful locomotives in storage lines. A minimum of four different paint schemes required.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
