Happy Birthday, Norfolk Southern! Thirty years ago today, NS was formed with the merger of the Norfolk and Western and Southern Railway. Later, on June 1, 1999, the Conrail acquisition led to an even bigger and stronger Corporation. To symbolize the occasion, a "photo freight" was organized with NS SD40-2 # 6103 and three borrowed GP30's: Conrail 2233 from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Southern 2594 from the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth (Atlanta), GA (on loan to the Tennesee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga), NW 522 from the Roanoke Chapter NRHS, ten brand new coal hoppers built by Freight Car America in Roanoke, and a genuine red NW caboose from the Roanoke Chapter NRHS.
