A BNSF westbound freight holds in the siding at Austin, Montana, as an eastbound freight approaches the west end. This is Mullan Pass at it’s best. Three levels of track can be seen from this vantage point. The third level is just above the lead locomotive on the eastbound. The consist of the eastbound is headed by a BNSF Warbonnet DASH, 9 and includes a rare Montana Rail Link SDP40 (SDP40-2XR) no. 290. The 290, which started its life on Great Northern, and is usually assigned to work train service, was picked up at Garrison.
