Remarks & Notes
Passing the Frank Slide
An eastbound Canadian Pacific freight train is passing through the former town of Frank, Alberta, on CP’s Crowsnest Pass line on September 28, 2010. At 4:10 a.m. on April 29th, 1903, 82 million tons of rock fell from the summit of Turtle Mountain into the Crowsnest River valley below, covering a portion of the CP and nearly wiping out the town of Frank. At least 90 people were killed in the 90 seconds the slide occurred. The original site of the town was later abandoned because of the continuing unstable nature of the mountain above. In this view, the train is passing some of the debris from the massive slide as rain storms brew over Crowsnest Pass in the background. Union Pacific SD90/43MACs are frequently seen in a pool with CP between Spokane and Calgary.
