Rio Grande opted not to join Amtrak (but reluctantly did about 13 years later) and ran its own Rio Grande Zephyr between Denver and Salt Lake City, over one day, back the next, except on Wednesdays. Westbound No. 17 with famous F9 5771 on the point is near Grizzly in one of Colorado's most scenic canyons -- Glenwood Canyon -- on April 17, 1980 before completion of I-70 and the tremendous growth of vegetation on the right of way, both of which preclude such a photo today. Arguably 5771 became one of the most photographed EMD F units ever.
