Remarks & Notes |
How very, very fortunate I am to live in Yorkshire. No less than seven steam-hauled specials will have passed through the county this week alone giving a wonderful opportunity to capture scenes such as this. 'Duchess of Sutherland' was making fine progress this morning along the River Calder valley at Luddenden Foot. The Calder Valley line of the Manchester & Leeds Railway was the first of the trans-Pennine routes engineered by George Stephenson (1781-1848). Once there were water troughs here to replenish the tenders of passing locomotives but those days are long past and no trace of them now remains. We'll just have to hope that the Duchess has a full tender to reach her next water stop, as she travels to the Yorkshire coast at Scarborough! |
