Southbound WP&Y Train 2 with three specially-built GE units (Nos. 98, 97, 92) is now in Alaska and USA territory and exits the only tunnel on the 110-mile line twenty-one miles after leaving the 2,940-ft. summit on Sept. 2, 1978. Drilling the 245-ft. tunnel was one of the most daunting tasks for the laborers as they had to be suspended by ropes to reach this spot on "tunnel mountain" in 1899.
