Remarks & Notes |
The first train on the former D&H Sanford Lake Branch in over 20 years rolls NB thru the Hamlet of North River with a special inspection train for invited guests of the railroad. There were also a few light engine runs earlier in the week. This line was urgently built during World War II to reach a titanium deposit deep in the Adirondack Mountains at Sanford Lake-Tahawus. For approx. 40 years daily trains of hopper cars hauled ore down this line but on November 17, 1989 that ended with the closure and mothballing of the line following an earlier closure of mining operations. S&NC now offers freight service on this line (passenger service is currently not planned). The tracks are currently in service to the Barton Mines Garnet Processing Plant just to the north of the actual Hamlet of North River. |
