Four dirty and well travelled old ladies running light units across the Umgababa Bridge on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast back to their depot in Wentworth, Durban. These Class 6E1 Electrics have just dropped off a load of timber for Saiccor / Sappi in Umkomaas. The final phasing out of the Class 6E1, as freight haulers on the Natal Main Line, began towards the end of 2010 in Kwazulu Natal, although the conversion upgrade process of them to Class 18E began a decade earlier at Koedespoort and continues today. PRASA / Shosholoza Meyl still use a few of them for passenger service on the Natal Main Line. These four, which fall under Transnet Freight Rail, are relegated to work on the Natal North & South Coast now, but I would say their days are numbered. Koedespoort in Pretoria, and an upgrade to Class 18E, to extend their working life is calling.
Rare South African photographs (older and newer) on RailPictures.Net, where the potential to recreate them either no longer exists for any number of reasons, or the chances of another opportunity are very slim or non existent!
The red & whisker livery of the South African Railways / Suid Afrikaanse Spoorwee collection. Getting harder to find examples of this fantastic and much loved livery still in service!
