Remarks & Notes |
Do you remember when railroads employed crossing guards? The Union Pacific and Rio Grande once employed men to protect switch movements in South Yard over busy 3rd North Street crossing in Salt Lake City. Here a Rio Grande transfer run from the Southern Pacific at Ogden heads for Roper Yard on July 27, 1977. A few years after this shot was taken, the shanty and guard were eliminated and replaced with (you guessed it) flashing lights and automatic crossing gates. |
