AT&SF 3529 West (southbound) to Houston had a meet with an opposing eastward train at Booth, Texas, and failed to get stopped at the closing end, sideswiping and plowing into the rear portion of the other train, April 15, 1973. The engineer was killed and the head brakeman jumped and survived. Note all the rain…. and resulting mud a foot deep when the sideboom bulldozers went to work picking it all up. Notice also the destroyed ATSF pig van in the background above the GP-39-2. It was a load of beer can lids in sanitary sleeves en route to the Anheuser-Busch brewery in Houston. They were everywhere in the mud, trampled by the dozers. Later it was discovered 5 cents tax had been prepaid on every one of them.
