Remarks & Notes |
Harper's Ferry, WV 11/9/2012 - Westbound manifest Q-400 exits Harper's Ferry tunnel on the Cumberland Subdivision as it crosses the Potomac River below the craggy cliffs of Maryland Heights at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. A cluster of B&O river crossings include the ruins of the first bridge, while today the second crossing carries the Shenandoah Subdivision on a through-truss bridge. The most recent bridge built in 1931 carries today's mainline and Q-400 to the west. In the lower left hand corner of the image, one of the most important locations in Civil War history stands: the firehouse where John Brown was captured after leading a failed raid on the U.S. armory in an attempt to free slaves. |
