Cumberland Valley Division local passenger number 12, a daily Norton, VA to Pineville, KY run, steams downgrade out of Callahan’s Nose Tunnel between Appalachia and Big Stone Gap, Virginia in July 1949. The train has just rolled under Southern’s Appalachia Division main line. The 82 would be retired on March 15, 1950, and number 12 discontinued effective February 1, 1953. The line itself was mothballed in 1986-87, and is now being developed into a hiking trail. The rails were pulled up in 2012. (photo by the late H. Reid)
