Remarks & Notes
A PATH Train crosses the Hackensack River over the PATH Lift Bridge on its way to the World Trade Center. The Pennsylvania Railroad built this bridge in 1900 to serve Exchange Place in Jersey City. After the railroad tunnel was opened into Manhatten in 1910, this route was down-graded and the extra capacity was made available to the Hudson and Manhatten Railroad to run from from the storied Manhatten Transfer in Harrison to Jersey City. This bridge served both railroads until 1961 when the PRR ended service to Exchange Place and has been used exclusively by PATH since then. Note that the PRR catenary is still up across the bridge, but PATH relies on a third rail for electrical power.
