Remarks & Notes |
Having showcased several of the late Kenneth Field's photos taken in the Pennine hills between Lancashire and Yorkshire I thought it was time to look at the electrified Woodhead route between Manchester, Sheffield and Wath. Here 1500 volt DC class EM1 Bo-Bo electric No 26020 comes down from the Woodhead tunnel and approaches Penistone with an eastbound freight train for Wath on a winters day in 1955. This loco was exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and was specially given chromed handrails and window frames. It survives to-day as part of the National Collection. The Woodhead line was controversally closed on 17th July 1981. |
