UP train MWCNP 15 (Manifest; West Colton CA to North Platte NE), led by SD70ACe 1983 painted to commemorate the Western Pacific Railroad, passed by the BNSF California Division Christmas Train (O-SBDSBD2-15) while that train was preparing to load passengers. But the little eight car train was able to beat the UP train to Silverwood, just around the curve from Summit! The passenger special snuck up Track 3, which used to be primarily used for downhill westbound trains (note how this line drops off just beyond the passenger train's rear ES44C4 diesel). Track 2, between these two trains, has another UP freight headed westbound down the hill (led by UP SD90MAC 8151), and UP 1983 is on Track 1. And off to the right, a bit above these three mainlines, can be seen the UP's Palmdale Cutoff, which was built by Southern Pacific in the late 1960s. (Incidently, UP SD70ACe 1996, the Southern Pacific Heritage unit, was the DPU on the rear of the MWCNP 15.)
