For many years, CofG/SOU/NS trains on the branch between Opelika and Roanoke (later cut back to Lafayette) used 2.42 miles of the WofA/FL/SS/CSX between downtown Opelika and Roanoke Junction. In 1975 it was still an every-day-but-Sunday operation, which gave me one chance a week to catch it. In this shot #7, which left town before dawn as #8, is passing Piedmont Fertilizer's siding as it drops down into Opelika.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
