Brilliant sun and shadow greet Rio Grande train #187, descending the 2% through Gilluly on July 24, 1987. The train has already dropped 1010 feet in elevation since toping Soldier Summit some ten miles away by rail. Train 187 often had a wild variety of cars, interchanged with the BN in Denver. This sample features grain hoppers, tank cars, autoracks, piggyback trailers on flats, and SPFE refrigerator cars. Note also the bright orange Fairmont motor car peeking just outside the standard D&RGW speeder shed.
