The Camden & Amboy Railroad 1939 built "John Bull" Replica
Built in 1939 by the PRR's Altoona shops to replace the still surviving original "John Bull" which had since been donated to the Smithsonian Institute (1884). The original was built in England for NJ's first railroad, the C&A, in 1831. Originally an 0-4-0, the lead truck was added for better stability but required uncoupling of one set of driving wheels - hence it's 0-2-4 designation. The C&A was eventually merged into the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company which was later acquired by the PRR. Though initially named for the C&A president, as "the Stevenson #1", it became better known for a cartoon character in England - "John Bull".
