Amtrak No. 6, the California Zephyr, skirts the Bookcliffs east of Solitude, Utah, on the morning of March 5, 2012. Union Pacific was in the middle of replacing the signals on this section of the Green River Subdivision at the time, as can be seen by the new signal still facing away from the right-of-way. Soon, the old Rio Grande signals guarding the railroad through the Utah desert will be gone, along with the track-following code line. Even in a place where time doesn’t seem to change, it does…
