An eastbound Union Pacific coal train surrounds us in the middle of Big 10 Curve on Memorial Day morning 2013. Lead locomotives Nos. 7106 and 5795 are on the lower part of the loop, while lone rear DPU No. 5719 is just crossing the east switch at Eisele siding. This coal train was made up of a variety of old hoppers, including many of former MoPac, Rio Grande, C&NW and BN heritage. Watching loaded coal trains descending the 2% grade of the Front Range’s Moffat Tunnel Subdivision can be quite the show.
