A loaded ore train with cars equipped with traditional friction bearing trucks and steel brake shoes creates a smoke cloud as it nears the base of the 2.2% grade of Proctor Hill near the Duluth ore docks. Roller bearing axles and composite brake shoes have greatly reduced smoke that was common on ore trains (you could follow the progress of trains by the cloud moving down the hill). |
