Remarks & Notes |
The class 31 diesel-electric locomotives (GE U12B) were imported from the USA and placed in service on the South African Railways (SAR) in 1958. All have been withdrawn, but a few survive in industrial use with private operators. This example is owned by RRL Grindrod and operates at Welkom, hauling gold-bearing ore from two of Harmony Gold's shafts on the north west side of town. The original high short hood has been replaced with a chopped nose. Taken with permission during Tanago's recent South Africa railfan tour. |
