The all-coach, extra-fare El Capitan is about to enter the
newer of the two tunnels at the summit of Raton Pass on
its way west. The older wood-lined tunnel was abandoned in 1949 and plugged in 1953 due
to maintenance problems and declining traffic. The newer
tunnel is still in use by Amtrak's Southwest Chief. The sign adjacent to the diesels reads
"Lower Extension Stack Here".
