| My very first visit to Rio Grande's Roper Yard on New Year's Eve 1976 yielded this amazing grouping of locomotives. Whenever I hear about EMD's 'SD45' model, I always think of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Two of the big locomotives bracket an EMD SD40. At right, a trio of Western Pacific GE 'U-boats' are serviced and ready to lead a WP train west to Nevada and California. Between the SP and WP power is a EMD GP20 that lead a UP transfer of cars from North Yard in Salt Lake City to the Rio Grande yard in South Salt Lake. |
