Remarks & Notes |
The first of the three Southern Railway Co-Co electric locos No 20001 has just passed Clapham Junction on the Brighton main line with the morning Victoria to Newhaven boat train. These locos drew 750 volts DC off the third rail but had a pantograph for working in a few sidings that had overhead wires as a safety precaution. This loco was built in 1941 as SR No CC 1 and was withdrawn for scrapping in 1969. The folding discs on the front of the loco are Southern Region headcode discs that indicated to signal men the route and destination of the train. Steam locomotives carried discs by day and oil lamps by night. |
