Grinding its way up the 2.92% grade from the Jordan River crossing, Rio Grande's Midvale Tramp local is less then 1/2 a mile from the mainline connection at the Midvale wye. The trio of original D&RGW GP30s have plenty of tonnage on the draw bar today with box cars of copper concentrate, tank cars of sulphuric acid, and hoppers of track ballast from Kennecott Copper in Magna. The large piles of smelter slag (at right) are gone today, replaced by the Bingham Junction retail/housing development. The D&RGW right of way (sold by the UP to UTA in 2007) is now a double track light rail route to South Jordan.
