A trio of new Union Pacific SD60Ms lead Rio Grande's 756 coal empty at the Valley Camp load out on the scenic Pleasant Valley Branch. This facility opened in Sept. 1975 and the coal mine is in nearby Boarding House Canyon two miles west of Clear Creek. Flooding in the spring of 1983 washed out the track and shut the operation down. In July of 1985, the track was rebuilt and reopened for the loading of Intermountain Power Project and Nevada Power Company coal trains. By 1994, White Oak Mining & Construction Co. took over operations until the mine was closed for the last time in Feb. 2003. By 2005, Valley Camp was dismantled and the property was reclaimed and not a trace of Valley Camp remains today.
