View is looking north from the throat of the South Yard at BNSF’s Alliance, Nebraska terminal. Trains are staged in this yard to leave in 3 directions of the compass. Loads leave here to go east on the Sandhills Sub to Lincoln and points south and east. Empties from the south leave here to go north on the Butte Sub to the northern mines in the Powder River Basin. Lastly, both loads and empties leave this yard southward, towards the photographer. Loads go south on the Angora Sub to Northport, Sterling and on to Denver. Empties can also go south to Northport, then turn west to Guernsey, Wyoming and into the southern end of the PRB for loading. Alliance is an extremely busy place and a visitor is practically never out of the sight of moving trains.
