Remarks & Notes |
Heading west along the former B&O's Magnolia Cutoff in January, 2012 is train Q217. The head end is passing thru Graham Tunnel, a 900 foot bore thru Tunnel Hill bordered on both sides by the Potomac River. The tunnel and hill reside in the State of Maryland whereas the photographer at Kessler and the rear end of train at Magnolia are in the State of West Virginia.
The original Low Line passes under both bridges and follows the course of the river. It was abandoned in the 1960's. The bridges and tunnel eliminated roughly 2 miles of track. The tunnel has since been notched to allow domestic double stack intermodal containers as part of CSX's National Gateway Project. |
