In the years after the Rio Grande/Southern Pacific merger, Rio Grande locomotives often accumulated great quantities of filth, as can be seen in the pair of EMD SD40T-2 point helpers on this westbound SP freight climbing the grades of Price River Canyon. The train is approaching Kyune, Utah, and is west of the Lynn Crossovers on the route over Soldier Summit on September 7, 1995. Rio Grande Nos. 5355 and 5369 look as though they have been used in helper service a while; note the nice layer of sand residue highlighting the grimy units.
