NJ Transit announced to Raritan Valley Line customers that equipment assignments would be adjusted in late January, with some multi-level consists being replaced by single-level cars (which rarely operate on the RVL). This was done in preparation for rail service to Super Bowl XLVIII. There is a severe lack of suitable parking at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, and NJ Transit's direct service to the stadium is critical for this event. This reassignment provides a chance to see some different equipment operating on the RVL. Train 5423 is led by a typical PL42AC, with a mix of Comet II, Comet IV and Comet V cars in tow.
