A rare photo opportunity, in the midst of a brewing (typical) summer afternoon thunderstorm, with a Class 5E1 Series 5 locomotive, E1102, originally built in 1966, and a Class 6E1 Series 3 locomotive, E1358, built in 1972. Transnet Freight Rail have retained two Class 5E1 Series 5 locomotives in service, E1101 & E1102, both have been significantly upgraded and are now used for Road Knowledge purposes, where they work in conjunction with Road Knowledge Coach No. 40117 - this coach is fitted with a classroom type setup and driving controls at both ends as well as windowed ends for on the road training. E1358 was being used as the depot shunter at the time that this photo was taken, but has since been put through the 18E Upgrade / Conversion Program and is now back in mainline service as a reclassified Class 18E Series 2 locomotive, 18-721.
