60009 Union of South Africa gives rides in brake vans at a cost of £2.50 a trip. The remainder of the museum is free and crowds flock around the 5 other A4's parked in front Locomotion. This site used to be where the majority of wagons were built for British Railways but less freight and line closures rendered the site uneconomical. The works closed and Shildon threatened to become a ghost town, but the coming of the museum meant that some pride has been put back into the area. This Gathering, which ends today has been a great
success and hopefully railfans in North America can enjoy the cosmetically restored A4's when the return across the Atlantic |
