Remarks & Notes |
Niligiri mountain railway is the longest meter gauge Hill-railroad in India. It has a Rack and Pinion arrangement for the steepest gradient of 1 in 12. After consistent service of about 75+ years, the X-class Swiss locomotives recently ran into some trouble due to non-availability of quality coal and few worn out components. A team of Indian Railway's Golden Rock Workshop engineers, undertook a challenging task and modified these coal fired locomotives into oil fired ones. They also refurbished them with some new components manufactured from old patterns. Here is the resulted Oil-fired steam locomotive which is in regular service for last few years. |
