VIA’s westbound Train 1 “Canadian” with 11 cars passes Stephen, B.C. and is about to leap off Kicking Horse Pass on fateful Oct. 4, 1989. That was the day the Canadian Government announced severe cuts to VIA service which would end Train 1 running over CP’s scenic western Canada lines, leaving only service over the CN through Edmonton and Jasper. After January 4, 1990, no VIA train ran this route.
