Remarks & Notes |
Limestone rock characterises the Settle and Carlisle route for much of its length, particularly at higher altitudes. Over countless millennia water has eroded the rock surface into these formations, known locally as 'clints and grykes'. Clints being the slabs of limestone and grykes the water eroded fissures. This has little to do with the passage of today's 'Cathedrals Express' with locomotive 'Galatea' and its train in attractive (if unauthentic) matching livery. I just thought you might like a geology lesson! |
