Remarks & Notes |
The story of Ribblehead Viaduct is the stuff of legend. It cost 100 lives of the 'navvies' that built it between 1870 and 1874 and as many more amongst their wives and families living in the shanty towns below its base. The lawless and tough lifestyle of these 'towns' equalled anything the American 'Wild West' had to offer, even attracting missionaries to tame their citizens! It's grandeur stands as a monument to their labours. |
