After swallowing the SL-SF, BN - and later BNSF - tried mightily to figure the best way to serve Mobile. After Frisco predecessor Alabama, Tennessee & Northern was abandoned, Mobile traffic was routed over the old L&N to Atmore, AL where it regained home rails on the ex-Frisco Pensacola line. Another route was via NS (ex-Southern) between Mobile and Kimbrough, then again onto the Pensacola line. In this photo, a train out of Mobile has come up the old Southern to Kimbrough and it moving back onto former Frisco rails for the run to Amory, MS.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
