Remarks & Notes |
This replica of Stephenson's Rocket was built in 1934. It was built as a static display to show the internal workings of the multi tube boiler. And one of the cylinders and valve chests has been sectioned to show the way in which they worked. The National Railway Museum also has a operational replica of Stephensons' Rocket, and this is the one seen in one of my other photographs. It was giving rides in the museum's South Yard when i visited the museum on the same day I made this photo. Incidentally the 'first' replica Rocket was built in 1881 by The London & North Western Railway. They have in fact been 9 full size replicas of Rocket built between 1881 and 1979. This example was the last of four built between 1929 and 1935, (Although the date on the builders plate is 1934!) the other 3 have (had) been exported to the USA. Two of them were operable, while the other was sectioned. Source direct from The National Railway Museum in York England. |
