KCS E8 27 was looking a bit ratty as it led a tiny 3-car “Southern Belle” out of Kansas City Union Depot at Tower 6 on Feb. 12, 1969. Trains 1 and 2, the “Southern Belle,” didn’t survive until Amtrak as their last 870-mile runs to New Orleans were less than 9 months away on Nov. 2, 1969, and hence the E units were no long needed. But just before being sold to the C&NW the following January, this E unit was painted all white.
