Ever seen the swarm of electric locomotives that guide and tow ships through the Panama Canal? These are the first two on this port side of a container ship; there are probably six others attached to it, to carefully guide it through the locks with only inches to spare on each side. Local canal tour guides explaining operations on a loudspeaker pronounce them “LOK-a-MA-ters.” Small electric engines extremely vital to global commerce.
