Union Pacific's first SD40 has been serviced and is ready to haul freight at North Yard in Salt Lake City. It was built by EMD for the UP in March 1966 and retired on Feb. 9, 1987. After retirement, it was sold to National Railway Equipment in November 1987, used in national lease service as NHL 3000; leased to NdeM, as NREX 3000 in August 1992; sold to Morrison Knudsen, assigned number MKCX 9403, not renumbered; rebuilt to SD40M-2 by MK Rail, Hornell, N.Y., completed as SP 8625 on 24 February 1995 (renumbered to UP 2701 on 5 February 2002).
